A Waste of Time

Congress really has better things to do than raise indecency fines on broadcast outlets. I understand the outrage and frustration with some of the things that go on television, but at the end of the day it is the parents responsibility to ensure that their children do not see and hear things that are objectionable. And with all of the other problems our nation faces right now, indecency fines should be at the very back of the line...

Now here is an issue that just begs for Republicans and Democrats to come together in unity.

You're absolutely right, it is a parent's responsibility to regulate a child's television privilages, but is it not also the responsibility of those creating the programming? Broadcasters create shows with intended audiences and timeslots in mind, afterall.

Just as I cannot beat up someone's kid and then pass the buck onto the parents for letting that child pass through my neighborhood, broadcasting companies should not be able to do the same regarding inappropriate programming marketed to groups unable to emotionally deal with the content.

Holding parents accountable does by any means require us to stop holding other groups accountable. Both should be happening on a wide variety of issues, and neither does anything at all to undermine the other.
