Blast from the Past

Yes folks, Vinny Testaverde may be in an NFL starting lineup near you this weekend:
Carolina Panthers quarterback David Carr missed practice for a second straight day Thursday with a sore back, increasing the chances 43-year-old Vinny Testaverde could start on Sunday at Arizona.

Testaverde, signed on Wednesday, and undrafted rookie Matt Moore, signed just over a month ago, took all the snaps in practice for the banged-up Panthers. Coach John Fox wouldn't say which QB he'd use if Carr can't play Sunday.

I am stunned an amazed that the same Vinny Testeverde that was run out of Baltimore after the 1997, only to be succeeded by a guy who is now Stanford's Head Coach.

Vinny getting pretty close to Steve DeBerg and George Blanda territory, actually...

Although Testaverde has the experience, he really won't be able to grasp the Panther play book in less than a week. If the Panthers were smart, they'd turn things over to 3rd string QB Matt Moore. At least he (supposedly) knows the plays. Besides, then the Panthers can see if he's worth keeping on the roster once all their QB's are healthy. They have little to lose. They appear to be going nowhere this season.

Bud,

I don't want this to be some football chat blog but you are way off.

"They appear to be going nowhere this season."

First, Carolina leads its division, which is particularly soft this year. They have every chance of "going somewhere" if they can survive the injuries.

Second, the NFC is weak and it would not be a surprise to see an 8-8 team make the playoffs. The Panthers already have three wins five weeks into the season.

Third, no NFL can give up five weeks into the season. Carolina needs to put the QB they think gives them the best chance to win in the game. It may be a tough choice but Testaverde may make more sense learning the playbook rather than a backup who is untested.

With a good running game and defense ball management becomes key and a veteran like Testaverde has those advantages.

Carolina is fortunate that Tampa Bay hasn't straightened itself out at New Orleans has just been unfathomably bad.

The winner of the south goes 8-8. At best.

Greg,

I love to blog about football. It is perhaps the only thing that interests me more than politics. I respect your opinion, but I need to correct you on one thing: the Panthers are in second place by virtue of their loss to Tampa Bay.

I don't them going anywhere for several reasons. First, they have the 25th ranked defense in the league. Likewise, they have the 23rd ranked offense.

Second, the schedule doesn't bode well in their favor. They face the Cardinals this week. I trust Kurt Warner will light the world on fire for at least his first few starts. In fact, I am hoping for the same because I signed Warner to my fantasy team. Anyways, the Bucs have already played the Colts and the Seahawks. The Panthers still have to face these tough opponents.

At this point, the Panthers have the cards stacked against them. If the third string is worthy enough to play now, I question why they even waste a spot on the 53 man roster for him to begin with.
