An idea no better

So apparently, a certain someone thinks that the County Executive should be able to pick the Superintendent of Schools:
But Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold agreed with the governor. If school superintendents answered to executives, school board budget requests might be more manageable, he said.

"Right now, they present wish-list budgets which are not reflective of the real-world fiscal realities," he said. "The county does not print money. We cannot come up with additional money."

If elected officials chose the superintendent, he said, "Voters can pin accountability directly on the shoulders of the county executive and council members, who have the responsibility for funding these programs. . . . they know where to pinpoint responsibility in the system."
I love that last sentence. Voters would love to be able to pin accountability for schools directly on elected officials. Voters would love to do that on an elected school board. The same kind of elected officials that John Leopold wants to explicitly ensure the voters of Anne Arundel County never get an opportunity to elect.....

Geeze you've got it in for Leopold. I tend to look at him ambivalently, but what's up with the disdain? I like you blog-- but questioning the Mike Collins stuff with 11th amendment and then slamming Leopold is kind of contradictory.

With that said, who the hell would be stupid enough to give county executives the power to appoint school boards? Better left to the people, period.
